If you’ve ever worried that this planet is on the road to ruin, and believe we can only save it by adopting a green lifestyle, then this book is definitely for you. It’s about a young couple who wanted to live that way, strictly organic, natural, and chemical-free, and how they slowly came to realise that there is an alternative route to the future which might not only save the planet but enable it to be sustainable. That route is the scientific way.
The young couple are Teresa and Justin and they live in Cloudesley Terrace, Islington. This then is their story, as they wrestle with the stresses of life, work, gardening, parenthood – and Christmas in Yorkshire.
It should take you about two hours to read Islington Green but I’d like to think that if you invest your time in doing so, then by the end of it you will have a different view of chemists and chemicals. Happy reading.
Islington Green John Emsley
Think you know John Emsley's work? Think again! The story of Teresa and Justin is NOT what you might imagine would have been written by Emsley, but once you get past the slightly jarring change of pace away from what one would normally expect from him (e.g., a few sexual references), the story is an interesting observation on some typical ignorance surrounding chemistry.Emsley dismantles a whole host of myths surrounding 'green' living and the horror of 'chemicals'. His take-downs know no bounds; sometimes they are damning, sometimes they are funny, other times they expose a little sadness, but they are relentless. Very light, quick and easy reading, the book tells a few simple tales of myth ruling over science. In a world where this is depressingly common, I enjoyed his corrections!
